In situ visualization and interactive computing

The Interactive Computing Centre of University Nice Sophia Antipolis has chosen an approach "more interactive" than the others Computing Centres "more intensive" : to couple problem computation with real time visualization (in-situ visualization).

In other words, we can use all the power of CPU nodes of cluster in order to view the simulation coupling with real time visualization : simulation can be stopped, its parameters can be modified in real time, thanks to visualization, we can see directly all results of these modifications, with the opportunity to have control of computation.

On Cicada, 2 free softwares can be used to do interactive computing : ParaView and VisIt.

  • VisIt uses libSim library to instrumentalize C++ programs
  • ParaView uses VTK et/ou HDF5 to couple visualization ans datas
